Abstract

Integration and alienation, identity and rupture, are some of the determinant peculiarities of literature of the exile, which is legitimized by assuming an identity both originating and intentional uprooting, by transgression of ethnic boundaries. This paper discusses the implications created by the construction of a public identity focused on political protest and the achievement of critic authority in the case of Romanian anticommunist writers Monica Lovinescu and Virgil Ierunca, notorious exiled intellectuals and editors at Radio Free Europe, the most influential voices for the Romanian intellectuals.
