Abstract

Geanina Cărbunariu is one of the atypical figures of romanian theatre. As a young artist, she maintained an independent artistic attitude and despite her age she was recognized and acknoledged by the international artistic community. Through her work and press statements she always aimed to promote unrestricted artistic work, aspiring to create valid, high-quality theatre. As a writter and theatre director she’s interested in adopting significant themes for conteporary romanian society. Her straightforward speech becomes aggressive to audiences and institutions that refuse to talk freely about delicate matters concerning the community. The theatre play „20/20‛ is a perfect example of Cărbunariu’s social consciousness and political attitude. The show is based on real events that occurred in Tîrgu-Mureș in the 90’s, and strives to promote social dialogue between two ethnic groups that live there. At the same time she isn’t afraid to criticize, mock or unmask unhealthy social behavior even if it’s active or passive-aggressive. Working with a mixt team form both ethnies, Cărbunariu succedes to create a social engaged theatre show, that promotes real social values and the importance of diversity.
