La hantise du double dans Macbett de Ionesco

This article sets out to examine the use that Ionesco makes of the motif of the double in his rewriting of
Shakespeare's Macbeth. The analysis of Ionesco's characters as degraded, grotesque doubles of their
Shakespearean counterparts and of the text of Macbett as a false reduplication of Macbeth will highlight the way
in which the Romanian-French playwright manipulates the Shakespearean intertext in order to express his own,
bleak but clownish, vision on history
