Dimitrie Cuclin: Muzică, artă, ştiinţă şi filosofie / Music, Art, Science and Philosophy
Abstract
We publish for the first time in Romania the conference held by Romanian philosopher and composer Dimitrie Cuclin, at the 8-th International Congress of Philosophy from Praga, 1934. In this short paper Cuclin gives an outline of his philosophical conception of music, conception exposed mainly in his work from 1933, Tratat de estetică muzicală (English version: An Epitome of the Musical Aesthetics). His mostimportant concept is the one of „function”, understood as degree of the soul’s movement towards pleasure or pain. Based on this concept (both musical and metaphysical) Cuclin builds a musical aesthetics which contains a Psychology of Elements and Forms, a Logic of Composition and an Ethics of the Expresive Essence.
