The Post-Communist Romanian Society and the Securitate’s Spectre
Abstract
Searching the past, from the political point of view, reveals certain characteristics which make Romania’s voice distinct among the other former members of the socialist camp. One of these is the most brutal way of cutting off with the previous regime. Romania is the only ex-communist country which removed the communist leadership by street fights causing numerous victims, and, also, the only country where the army units and various obscure forces (allegedly belonging to the secret services) opened fire against the people. The extremely intense debates beginning with the very first months of the year 1990, upon the presence and the role played by the Security in the mechanism of maintaining the communism in Romania were justified by the way in which the turning point from December 1989 took place and also by the suspicions related to the Security’s acts in the anti-communist movements repression.
