Tradition and (almost) Innovation in the ”New Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language”

Abstract

Our paper is dedicated to the memory of the late professor and scholar Stelian Dumistrăcel, a personality characterized by generosity, wise tolerance, attachment to his own language and a lot of linguistic common sense. The Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language is the lexicographic work best
known and most consulted by the Romanian public since its publication until today. The next edition of the dictionary should not be an exhaustive work (that would be impossible), but should reflect - wisely and decently - the language use, its structure and development prospects. Thus, it needs to remain (or become) a dictionary for people who want to be well informed and educated, for true language lovers who want to better understand and support the Romanian language.
