CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ENRICHES THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

Newspapers, TV screens and the internet space have been flooded, since
the first months of 2020, with new words, recently invented, borrowed or brought
to life from the old vocabulary in order to designate a pandemic reality that took us
by surprise. This paper aims to analyze those Romanian words that have prevailed
in public language along with this reality, called by the linguists either barbarisms
(terms borrowed from a foreign language and not yet assimilated) or slang words
(coming from a specific domain, in our case from the medical field).
