Abstract

The present study is based on a broader motivation, determined mainly by: a) bringing to the fore the thesis regarding the low presence of proverbs in the usual speech of peasants, starting from the surface analysis of a volume of dialectal texts. Rejecting this thesis (supported by Pavel Ruxăndoiu, who resumes a point previously put forward by Cezar Tabarcea), we will assert that such an assessment must take into account the expressive competence of the speakers, which becomes manifest in idiostyles; b) attempting to establish a functional paremiological fund used by rural speakers from the end of the nineteenth century as a basis for keeping up-to-date the features of a functional paremiological language in the style of public and private communication; c) reconsidering the presence of proverbs and other means used by the speakers as an expression of spontaneous temptation or intent to place the interlocutors at the same level of expressive competence. The analyses carried out in our study will demonstrate the existence of a mutation over the previous centuries: the paremiological inventory, far from being merely the monopoly of the figurative expression of popular speech, by individuals performing at this level, it belongs today to a general way of communication expressivity, with the sui-generis respect of the linguistic tradition.
