The EUPHEMISM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGES
Abstract
One of the challenges of analysing public discourse from a pragmatic perspective is that of the relationship between neologism and linguistic policies. The analysis of the neologism as a euphemism represents a general stylistic problem, which can apply to this type of loan, but the process must be evaluated from other perspectives, too: besides the intention to avoid trivial words, the euphemism is also an effect of the social and religious taboo. This approach deals with the question of the pragmatics of communication or of the linguistics of the text, a Coserian concept in which the investigation has as its objective particular situations of discourse. From
this perspective, the general effects of using a certain meaning of a word tend to
transform the results of expressive knowledge into codification at the level of
idiomatic knowledge.
