Abstract

Măxineni Monastery is one of the most important spiritual landmarks in Bărăgan. Founded by the ruler Matei Basarab, it has irradiated the culture and the light of the sciences, both in Braila area and throughout Wallachia since the XVIIth century. From the former heritage of the monastery, there remained copies of old and very valuable books illustrating that era, which was full of faith and culture. The present study highlights some of these XVIIth century cult books. In the present context, through the involvement of the Archdiocese of the Lower Danube and Archbishop Dr. Casian Crăciun, through a European project, this monastery, the voivodal house and the entire enclosure have been restored, in an exceptional manner; they must be rediscovered and we must bring “home” all the patrimonial values bearing the “Maxineni” brand.
